Reclaim your time – 4 tips for disconnecting from work

Written by ASU - Queensland Together branch | 4 October 2023

The ASU is campaigning for all workers in Australia to have the right to clock off and switch off. You can support the campaign by signing our petition here

We've compiled some essential tips to help you achieve a fulfilling work-life balance while making the most of your ASU membership.

  • Empower Yourself: Understand Your Rights

As a member of the Australian Services Union (ASU), you're never alone when it comes to navigating the complexities of the workplace. Your union is here for advice and support. Plus, take advantage of ASU Career Launchpad, offering over 100 professional development courses designed to both boost your skills and deepen your understanding of your workplace rights.

  • Take Control: Modify Your App Settings

Let's face it, our mobile phones can sometimes be more of a distraction than a tool—especially during our well-deserved downtime. By adjusting your app settings, you can silence work notifications outside of your standard work hours. This simple step can make it easier to fully disconnect and enjoy your time off. If you're planning to go on leave, consider placing work-related apps in a separate folder to reduce temptation.

  • Stay Offline to Recharge

We all know it's easier said than done to "just unplug" after work. However, setting aside time for hobbies, exercise, or spending quality time with friends and family can do wonders for your well-being. Pro tip: if you’re working from home, lock your laptop in a drawer after logging off. You'd be surprised how effective "out of sight, out of mind" can be.
